The West Highland Way Official Guide by Scottish Natural Heritage (Bob Aitken, Roger Smith) - Mercat Press
Opened in 1980, the West Highland Way was Scotland's first Long Distance Route and remains the most popular, with more than 15,000 walkers tackling it each year. It runs from Milngavie, on the outskirts of Glasgow, to Fort William. The 152km route passes along the east of Loch Lomond, the largest expanse of fresh water in Britain, and across Rannoch Moor, Scotland's grandest wilderness, through some of the finest scenery of mountain and stream, woodland and moorland, that Scotland has to show. This of the Official Guide has been revised and updated to include recent modifications to the route, is accompanied by a full-colour map and packaged in a practical plastic wallet.
This publication comes in two parts, a beautifully illustrated guide and a detailed route map, contained in a handy plastic wallet. The guide contains useful information on equipment, accommodation and useful contact addresses as well as detailed route details. The photographs are well chosen and certainly whet the appetite for the forthcoming adventure. The route description is accurate, although the path along Loch Lomond has been upgraded since this book was written (May 2000). The historical and anecdotal information make the journey more interesting, although nothing can truly compare to the beauty of the country that this path crosses. Whilst solo walkers or lightweight campers may not care to take the written guide the map is sufficiently detailed as to make it the only necessary navigational aid to take. It is a strip map but contains enough detail either side of the route to allow for side excursions.
